The Truth Finally!!
From a chemist telling you why Gel Coats Fail!
I had a very interesting and informative
conversation with 2 chemists’ Mr. Jay Lampert and Mr. Jim Luke that work
for Interplastic. Interplastic is the world’s largest
manufacturer of resins and gel coats. Interplastic
owns NAC the distributor in Mays Landing, NJ who sells their
products to Uglassit. When I called I told them
I was Premier Restoration, a pool contractor considering
fiberglassing old pools. I was looking for a thick quality
gel coat that would hopefully last 10 years, and one I could
give a five year warranty. I was told that this might
be a very foolish thing to do considering no one in the pool
industry they know of offers a warranty on any gel coat for
a retro fit on an old pool. They went into great detail on
why all gel coats fail within 2 or 3 years, by first chalking
then blistering and flaking.
They told me why gel coats last 10 – 20 years for newly
manufactured fiberglass pools, slides and
Jacuzzis. If you read my website it goes into great
detail about the longevity of gel coats which could last
20 years or better on newly manufactured one piece
fiberglass pools. These gel coats for new manufactured
fiberglass pools are put on a mold, which is the shape and
size of the pool. The application of fiberglass is then sprayed
or hand laid on top of the gel coat of the mold. Using this
method the gel coat cannot extotherminate (over
heat).
You now have the names of these chemists and phone numbers. I would
hope and I am sure Bill Nash of Uglassit would hope you would not call these
people.
I asked them if they would e-mail a letter stating these
facts. Corporate Policy would not allow them to do so.
They are now finally testing to see if they can manufacture
a retrofit gel coat for old swimming pool containment but
it can take years.
